I'm having a similar issue identifying an individual I recently caught... it doesn't help that it has significant damage to it's hindwings. It was caught just outside Bunia, DRC (first and only one I've observed in the savannah out here, though I've only been collecting for a few months). Any ideas on the ID? Thanks, Tom

The yellow band on the elgiva subspecies seems wider in all of the pictures I've seen. this specimen's ventral side is a lot darker than on any J. terea I've collected... this is what is really throwing me off in regards to identification. Here's a specimen of Junonia terea that I've collected (it's quite common in this area): edit: The more I look into it though, it being a J. terea subspecies seems to be the case... I'm personally not certain that it's elgiva, but I can't match it to any of the other subspecies either.

That makes sense. I was thinking they looked oily and had been wondering if I had handled them too much. I'll give the gasoline a try.
Thanks for the reply!

seems like some subspecies of Junonia terea Both Junonia terea and Junonia chorimene (which the above species' ventral side strongly resembles) are very common here. I'm not certain if that information would make a difference in your diagnosis though. Thanks, Tom

Hi! I just recently moved to the Ituri region of DR. Congo and am having some difficulty identifying some of the butterfly species I've been capturing. Does anyone have any ideas which species this might be? I've only caught/observed the one individual. (Also, if anyone could point me in the direction of good resources I could use for identifying butterflies from this region, that'd be much appreciated.) Tom

Hi all! I'm new to the forums, new to collecting beetles, and new to central Africa. (I moved to the DRC a few months ago.) So please excuse my newbie question. I recently caught several bright metallic green/green-blue beetles, unfortunately after setting them they've darkened to a rainbow of purple, pink, green and blue. They're still nice, but much duller. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Or to reverse the change in coloration? If pictures would be helpful I can upload some (I still have one live specimen with which to compare.) Thanks! Tom
