Hello Use the new url : archive.insectnet.com , it should work better. Note that the "old url" : insectnet.proboards.com will still work too. Anyway as written in the announcement section, we will soon change the forum software in few days.

For the new forum, a specific topic about USFWS procedures for American collectors would be useful. If anyone has enough knowledge to write it, it would be very useful for our American members. Any voluntary ?
It seems much easier to be a collector in the European Union.

Yes, the ability to easily attach picture is very important, we will have much more live topics, as all members will be able to share their field, collection or spreading board pictures.
And keeping the archive forum is key too ! The old members of Insectnet remember how sad we all were when Clark failed to keep the first forum in an archive.

yet on the same day that a White supremacist shoots and kills a bunch of Black people, we're posting the n-word on our insect forum (I guess it had to be done for science?). I fully agree with your post, but is this sentence a criticism against me ? I was just explaining that some butterflies have very "strange" common names that could be hurtful in 2022. As you can see on wikipedia or in any insect books: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_n%C3%A8gre_des_boisThe name came from the 19th century when the "n word" as you say was a synonym of "noir" in everyday's life.A little bit like in Spanish, if you want to translate "a black butterfly", you will get "una mariposa negra". There was nothing "racist" in the 19th century. But now, the term "Nègre" is a racist slur (as in English) and I would fully understand we change this butterfly name into something else. It is not by hiding potential issue that you fix them.

Dear members, Important communication : For several years I have been trying to upgrade the Insectnet forum software which is provided by the company Proboards (chosen by Clark). Unfortunately Proboards has never responded to our most basic requests and is now causing us additional problems: - unwanted ads - connection problems for some members - message to the administrators threatening to close the forum for strange reasons that I will not reveal. - Cloudflare bugs for some members - more and more insane bills for the hosting of photos (although not many) So I decided to change the software for the forum.
The new software will have the following advantages : - possibility to attach pictures in the messages for ALL members for free - better mobile version - it will be an open-source software which means that I can optimize it with my technical team without waiting for the Proboards team if we need a new option - small details improved This new software is ready and has already been tested by the whole moderation team. Thanks to them for their many insights. The only concern is that Proboards refuses any migration of topics and user accounts to another forum software... This means that : - the future forum will be open around June 1st on the new url : forum.insectnet.com- you will need to create a new account on the new forum (keep the same username, it will be easier for everybody). - the old forum will be closed to comments BUT will remain AVAILABLE on the address : archive.insectnet.com- all members will be notified by email of the change in order to have the maximum of posts quickly on the new forum. The change should take place around June 1st. I will keep you informed in this topic. This is a big change, but I'm sure the ability for all members to attach photos will make the Insectnet forum more interesting and richer in substantive discussion. Cheers Olivier

Thierry < lamprima2 was ironical. Coding is an interesting thing in taxonomy, but I doubt it would help more than binomial taxonomy, as thing will become very obscure to most of us. I guess it won't replace binomial taxonomy but will be added on top of it.

As always in politics, militantism is important to move lines and make progress, but extremism is dangerous. And the difference between both is by nature thin. You need a good democratic system with free press, good schools and counter-powers to avoid falling into extremism. I agree with tv, if some communities have good reasons to be offended by an insect common name, why not changing it (the "gypsy moth" is a good example as it is always described as a pest). And of course, let's not see "offense" where there is none. Once again, on a scientific forum like ours, only scientific names should really matter.

"The fish’s scientific name, Ptychocheilus lucius, remains unchanged" which is the only important thing on a scientific point of view. Common names often changes. In France, the Satyridae Minois dryas is called "Grand nègre des bois" = "Great Nigger of the woods" I guess the common name will be one day changed, no big deal. Picture by Marc Solari

I think the best ones are Juvisy, Frankfort and Modena.

After 2 years of cancellation due to the pandemic, the great Juvisy Paris Insect Fair is confirmed for 2022 ! It will be on the 24th & 25th September 2022. If you can attend it, don't miss it, it is one of the largest insect fairs in the world. It will be good to see many of you there, as every year before 2020 !
