I see nothing in their law about needing a collaborator and have in-laws that live there who have collected in the past. I also have word from a butterfly farmer and exporter in the country that no export is needed. USFWS has said nothing about needing a letter that no export permit is required and I have been communicating with them extensively at this point in several departments. Maybe they just forgot to mention it though. I might try with just a few specimens the first time and see what happens. The law is the law. What I said is accurate. It may be that USFWS focuses more enforcement on countries that make a big deal about this (like Mexico or Costa Rica) and less on those that don't care as much, but it is what it is--you can believe me or not. The Lacey Act has been in existence for well over 100 years and if you violate some other country's wildlife laws, no matter how minor, you are legally a poacher. I'd rather not be on the receiving end of that.

My understanding is that most if not all Latin American countries require you to be under the permit of a government-sponsored university researcher to collect. This is doable for some countries, extremely difficult for others (like Mexico). If El Salvador is one of the "easy" countries I'd gladly plan out a trip there at some point.
USFWS requires a valid collecting AND export permit for every nation (or letter stating that those aren't necessary if applicable), plus a formal declaration of possession upon arrival with Customs.

Not a gyno, a pupal deformity of some kind. Male.

Seems like damn few of us reach a ripe old age for one reason or another. Ron Gatrelle, Charles Bordelon, Larry Orsak all come to mind and there are many others.

I'll take the blame. I deleted the word "goon" twice from his post - in reference to people who work at USFW. I explained to him privately, that it is best to assume that the site is monitored at some level, and that it is best for all of us "not to poke the beast". It's one thing to explain your concerns, it's quite another to to inflame the situation further by denigrating other people. That was too much for him I guess. I too am sorry that he is leaving - and told him so. john John... in hindsight was this really necessary? We have been kissing FWS' behind for decades and yet they just get more and more Draconian every year. They are drunk on their unelected, unaccountable power. At some point, we need to have our own safe space where we can speak honestly. I guarantee you that our being on our "best behavior" is not winning over any hearts and minds within Uncle Sam. But, as I have stated earlier--his reaction was still over the top and unwarranted.

Not a fan of FWS at all--for decades they have operated under the mindset that we're guilty until proven innocent. They are morally offended by what we do even if no laws whatsoever have been broken; they see us as no different from tiger poachers, even if we are catching/trading/selling an insect species that numbers in the tens of millions. They have bought into the N.A.B.A./P.E.T.A. mindset and then some.
That being said, Bill G. is still a drama queen and I have no sympathy for this hissyfit of his. Wish him well, and that the door won't hit his keister on the way out.

Eh, I don't really know who you are but this strikes me as a drama queen-ish slap to us rather than legit difference of opinion. Bye.

Frustratingly instead of a going out of business sale, they have jacked up prices 25%. I was going to put an order in... Yeah, not surprised honestly. I'm really unhappy with how this has gone down. FYI, they are no longer producing any more items. It's whatever's in stock and that's it.

I guess my only real concern is the longevity of the pine wood (vs. poplar) and ability of museum pests to penetrate it. Also what are the fit and tolerances of Atelier's drawers like compared to Bioquip's?

FYI - Seems that you are describing Bio Quip's display cases. These are not drawers as you described them. You do understand these are not for long term storage of specimens. Long term storage of any once living animals requires they be kept in total darkness protected from ultraviolet rays. You may be able to use such cases if you replace the standard glass with 1/8" UV resistant plexiglass. I have designed and manufactured 2'x2' and 2'x4' such display cases with UV resistant plexiglass for several museums public insect displays. Standard plexiglass is not UV resistant. As little as 6-12 months of not protecting your specimens from UV rays usually results in the fading to white of all colors of once living materials. They are covered up at all times.

Is there anyone who makes, or can make, the 1041 drawer (18 x 24")?

It's not worth even attempting international collecting ANYWHERE without reliable, ironclad connections and fluency in the language, or lots and lots of baksheesh to lubricate the system with.

They live entirely off of stored larval fat like Saturniidae. I know of no credible reports of either Agathymus or Megathymus taking anything but mud. I guess I don't know what Turnerina in Mexico does, but I would be surprised if they do more than take water/mud (there are photos of that).
Why don't you go look for some larval tents right now? In lowland Arizona, they have begun to pupate and should be all done by the 10th of February or so.

I don't have a problem with relaxing green hairstreaks (Callophrys) with the standard water with a dash of white vinegar.

The better question is can you get a collecting permit for it which I doubt...
