Dear Adam, Chuck and Others As you know the NBPOL has huge plantations in Kimbe, New Britain Province,PNG, and it has a large efficient company owned entomological laboratory there at Dami. The past director at Dami was Charles Dewhurst, co-author of the SBBT birdwing book mentioned in the UK article. His work as a lepidopterist is legendary. The present director is Mark Ero, who also has done much research there. Perhaps he will direct work at the Higaturn Estate, the intended base for the birdwing breeding project in Oro Province. I will ask him. It is pleasing to note that John Tennent is also involved. I join Adam in wishing success to this project. Colon

Dear Nomad
I go to PNG for the collection of specimens each year or so with a net, a tent and a backpack and travel around for 2-3 months. I was last in PNG in 2015 and I was last on Mt Wilhelm in 2013

Dear Nomad
I might mention that about 1972 the PNG national field survey team built two timber huts at the lake below the summit mentioned by Bill on Mt Wilhelm. They are now in poor condition, but are preferable accommodation to pitching your tent on the open windy, often icy, slopes. The mountain remains in pristine condition although there have been many visitors since Bill's trip. The collection of specimens is allowed on the mountain, with the permission from the local tribal elders.
For Chuck
The ANU butterfly collection is housed in a separate building from the main university campus in Canberra and the building and the collection are not open to the public. A written request for access to the chief curator via their website giving your reasons for access would probably be successful for your visit in November

Dear raywang76, Adam I suggest that Adam is correct about the specimens coming from Robert Gotts. I also recognize his label. He was in PNG in 1972 I endorse the recommendation from Adam about the book by Robert Gotts called Minika Butterflies, which I might mention is recently released in its second edition. I am not sure that Robert was ever stationed in Rabaul, but he was a very active breeder in PNG, and he may have obtained pupa from Rabaul while he was in Sogeri or Tari. I will ask him when I next visit him and advise you further. Colon

hi Nomad
interested to note mention of the area near the Nepal/Tibet boarder being near Kapkot I have collected about 50km from the boarder at Nagarkot. Beautiful hill country with wonderful specimens. I wonder if it is the same place with a different spelling as I can not find Kapkot in my travel notes.

hi pete
Roatan is very popular and populated with many resorts. Collection on that island in the group is thus limited. Collection on Utila is better, as it is less populated, and on Guanaja, (especially the west coast) is even better as it is even less populated.
The best collection in that area I found to be in the cloud forests , just west of La Ceiba
I have been there a few times over the years

Dear Dave Usually Mario is very reliable with his specimens and prompt with his deliveries. I have visited him and his family, and traded well with him for years. There have been two terrible cyclones in Madagascar and this has added to the problems with the civil unrest and the disrupted email, telephone and post services. I suggest he would appreciate your patience. Colon

Collectors travelling to the Pacific Islands may be interested in some preparatory reading. As mentioned above, John Tennent has done a lot of work in this area and has a book published called "Butterflies of the Solomon Islands". He has also recently been to Milne Bay Province and another book may already be availiable , "Butterflies of Milne Bay Province"

Dave
You are right in that there are legal hassels for an exporter from Peru. There is a government fee, per specimen, per type: eg morpho: US 70c fee per specimen, or callicore US 30c per specimen. Then there is a permit fee, US 25.00 per parcel. Then there is an inspection fee (certification fee) US $20.00 per parcel. Then there are the etc, etc.

Many of the insect farms I have visited in Peru have many workers attending many thousands of specimens. A parcel of 1500 is not unusual.

I see a guy is advertising 1500 Morpho didius for sale, can't say I agree with that kind of wholesale slaughter myself, not from the same area wild caught. Makes one wonder if there are any butterflies left flying around his neck of the woods. Dave

Crino A graphic description of claspers was originally filed by DeVries in his books, although they relate to Costa Rica. As Adam says the same applies to krishna. Colon
