Which book would you recommend that gives a great overview, detailed information about places, biology, flight times and is in the best case complete with all species?

I don’t think there is a book available which is up to date. There are a few websites which cover all important information about North American butterflies.

I like the Kaufman Focus Guides "Butterflies of North America". The authors are Jim P. Brock & Kenn Kaufman. The book is organized by family and shows location maps and gives distinguishing features to tell species apart from one another. It also will list habitat, food plant and other basic information.

I agree with bugboys3. The Kaufman guide is very good. It's my main reference.

I agree with bugboys3. The Kaufman guide is very good. It's my main reference. Does it cover also Canadian species and ranges of those. Perhaps if it does I shall order a copy.

Thanks a lot, guys! That was for a chinese friend of mine who’ll soon study in the US, and after spending the summer with me collecting he really wants to start collecting too, so that guide will be a good start for him.
