Do to my relocation I missed out on most of the catocala season. I did put two bait traps in the trunk of my car before leaving Kentucky. I stopped at a Country Market near Mantua and purchased some bananas, apples and sugar and made some bait.
I checked my traps this AM and for four (4) Catocala relicta and two (2) Catocala cara. There was a rag of a Catocala a matrix. I borrowed some Spreading Boards and pins from a friend and I should have the mounted shortly.
Can't wait for the mover to get here Friday.

past week has been pretty slow, just a few cara, amatrix, ilia, neogama, maestosa, muliercula & piatrix. piatrix numbers are down considerably this year (definitely not complaining), usually see hundreds by now but i've caught between 25-30. Also no palaeogama (extirpated?) once again this year. Last time was just one in 2016.

Also my list so far this year:
C. amatrix (30+ BT) C. cara (4 BT) C. carissima (1 BT) C. coccinata (2 TS) C. epione (1 TS don't really count this one as it escaped) C. gracilis (10-15 BT) C. ilia (150+ TS, 30+ BT) C. lacrymosa (2 TS, 1 BT, form paulina that escaped) C. lineella/amica (5 BT) C. maestosa (30+ TS, 20+ BT) C. muliercula (30 BT) C. neogama (10-15 BT, 8-10 TS) C. obscura (1 BT) C. piatrix (20+ BT, 2 TS) C. ulalume (1 TS) C. ultronia (20+ BT) C. vidua (30+ TS, 6 BT)
BT for bait trap, TS for tree scanning. Calling it that as i rarely tap trees anymore. Not sure why it took me so long to realize this but tapping a tree sometimes will cause them to flush from surrounding trees 10 ft away. No doubt have lost a lot because of it. Also List is smaller than most on here as usual as i stick to my county. I did miss grynea which i had always caught between 10-20 a year since 2015. Still early here though, plenty of time left to add a couple more species. should see unijuga in september.

I am usually horrible looking at trees for them and it takes much longer to scan a tree than to just tap it. And with most of the tapping species being fairly common ones, it sucks to waste daylight looking at the tree when I'll most likely miss the moth visually anyway and just flush it with tapping anyway. My search image must suck!
The season is still in the peak now as most of the Catocala I see are fresh looking, with only the small species getting some wear. The vidua and cara came out in the last week and they are usually the latest species to emerge. I hope to see them into late September.

Well......just got back from my musky/Catocala trip to northern WIsc. Got a dandy 35lb musky of abt 47-48”. Then top that off, I got great Catocala action w sugaring. What a bday trip that was. Btw.....the musky thrashed and sunk a hook into my hand past the barb....ouch. I had to decide then and there whether to yank it out or hope she didn’t thrash again driving it deeper. I chose to yank the hook out before it could get deeper and do nerve, bone, tendon, or blood vessel damage. The Doc said I made the correct decision and simply gave me a prescription for antibiotics and a tetanus booster. It was the fattest musky I’ve ever caught. I did have a first aid kit in see boat which helped. I have pics, but can’t post here anymore like before. Love getting relictas and concumbens......they’re awesome.
7 cerogama 12 relicta w all three forms 5 ultronia 2 blandula 1 sordida 1 concumbens 1 brisseis 6 unijuga And a small orange one yet toID.

This past week C. amatrix finally showed up. I also got C. cerogama, nebulosa & retecta. I am still seeing C. insolabilis, paleogama, obscura, neogama, ilia & ultronia. I also collected what appears to be a melanistic form of C. paleogama. I will try to post of picture of it when it comes off the spreading board.
I am still hoping to see C. habilis, cara & relicta.

In eastern PA for the weekend and the hot weather was great for tapping! I put out some bait that same night and no moths at all. Not sure what's wrong and why baiting has sucked this year? My bait is heavy on bananas and molasses and seems good. The beer I used to moisten/ferment it is barely a week old. At least the tapping was productive.
C. amatrix - 1 C. habilis - 1 (first of the year) C. ilia - a few C. innubens - 2 C. maestosa - 12+ the most common species C. nebulosa - 2 C. neogama - 10+ all the pale form with three dark streaks C. obscura - a few C. parta - 1 C. vidua - 2
All except the innubens were quite fresh looking for mid August. Even the innubens was a little worn but the wings were not tattered. I was very surprised not to run into piatrix, retecta, palaeogama, or lacrymosa given the amount of neogama hostplant (walnut) and all the various species of hickories and oaks. Also a ton of willow near the water but few willow feeders.
