The temperature was well into the upper 70's today, but overcast. I set out six (6) Bait Traps, a combination of Flat Bottom and Slotted Pan all Dura Life and a dozen (12) Pheromone Traps.
I am continuing the Moth Survey in the Log Gap SF and the Yellowwood SF in Indiana. If the weather cooperates, I should begin this coming Thursday.
I had an excellent winter collecting Winter/Cold Weather Moths in Jan/Feb/Mar. I still have a number of Kill Type Bait Traps out in Powell and Morgan Counties in Kentucky, McCreary and Laurel counties in southern Kentucky and Harrison County in southern Indiana. I will have most of them down and replaced with Flat Bottom and Slotted Pan Bait Traps by weeks end.
We had several very hard freezes in April. I was collecting in Kleber WMA, Owen County, KY on Thursday and most of the Persimmons trees lost there blooms. Two years in a row.
If I can work it out, I will visit Black Mountain, the highest point in Kentucky. Would like to collect a few Erora least this week.
If I can work it out, I may attempt a trip to Highlands County Virginia next week. It has been many a moon (1996?)since my last visit. Another good location for Erora least.
Anyone else planning some spring trips??

Leroy,
We missed you at the KY Leps outing this weekend. Had a good group (about 10), got H. metea, I. augustinus, etc, but leps were scarce and it still looked like winter in the woods. Saw only one or two A. midea, P. virginiensis; a few glaucus and marcellus were out and about. It was definitely windier than necessary, which didn't help collecting. James Adams set out 6 light traps and said he did well with moths.
Hate to tell you, but the forecast for Appalachia, VA at the foot of Black Mtn calls for snow Monday and the rest of the week cool (50's to 60's). Not real good hairstreak weather!
Regards, jh

I had planned on attending but could not find anyone who would stay with MS Betty.
Her health continues to decline.

It is getting warm here too. Above 25°C around the Mediterranea. I plan my first butterfly trip this Saturday in the Massif de la Sainte Baume, in Provence, South France. Hope to see many rare Lycaenidae.

Here in Tennessee I am experiencing a frustrating weather pattern. We get a few days of nice weather then back to cold conditions. Last night we had yet another frost after two days in the low 80's F. Today conditions will be partly cloudy in the low 70's, but the three nights in the high 30's. Very few moths and butterflies out due to fluctuating temperatures. I wish things would stabilize! Last spring we had similar conditions, and collecting was rather poor compared to most years in the recent past.

Same thing here in Illinois. Trees should have leaves by now but, they don't. Frustrating to say the least.

In KY last week I was wearing a Hawaiian shirt. Today in NY there is snow on the ground. Warmer my butt.

I can understand Tom's frustration. Same here in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. It has been in the 60's 70's then all of a sudden, and snow storm or rain storm comes in and the temperatures drop. Hope it stays decent for next weekend.

Today I set out six (6) Bait Traps and about a dozen Pheromone Traps for Sessidae Moths.
I began the process "again", of getting all my over wintering material from under my deck. Lot's to do to get ready for the Season.
We had an elderly gentleman in our neighborhood who moved into an Assisted living community last month. His daughter gave me another freezer (you should hear my wife.), most of his fishing gear and an almost new 60" TV.
The old geezer across the street from me got his collection of PlayBoy magazines. He has blister on his right hand this AM.
I can almost smell the Catocala moths.

Today in Toronto first warm day +14C, but still cold northern wind blow in opened area makes it feel colder then should be this time of the year (21 Apr). I went to near by deciduous forest to search for cocoons but of course didn't find any, but I saw couple of butterflies enjoying first rays of sun. Nymphalis antiopa playing in the snow.

The easiest cacoons to find are promethea. Look low (1m) too. If you find one you will find more.

This was 3 days ago, but yesterday it hit 70's. Funny how temp can change so quick.

I begin my 2018 survey for the Indiana Forest Alliance in the Morgan-Monroe State Forest in Monroe County and the Yellowwood State Forest in Brown County. Both forest are in the hill county south of Indianapolis, Indiana. Last year (The first year) I record 1024 species of Lepidoptera. It included 4 State Record moths.
I will not begin posting until the Catocala, and Papaipema start flying.
I had an absolute blast last year. Not just the collecting but the wild life in general. The rural area and the local inhabitants made it a year to remember.
If you read enough last year, well, too bad, you will hear more this year 2018.
Also, I was given the location for a large seep about an hour South of Martinsville, Indiana. Lot's of Osmunda ferns. Papaipema speciosissima! Come on October!!
