Hello Collectors and Entomologists ... Please, I would like if any of your specialists in Heliconiidae could identify me with three (3) butterfly specimens that I have obtained in Brazil. I can send you the photographs ... All help will be very grateful. Greetings cordially: Andres Varga (www.mariposasdelmundo.com)

You can post photos of the specimens for everyone to see in this thread by clicking on the Reply button at top left of the Quick Reply window at the bottom of the page. At the top of the window you will see various icons, with an insert image icon near the right side of the row. If you click that you can insert the URL of your photo already online (such as on your own website). If the photos are not online you can use the Add Attachment button at top right to upload photos from your computer, but please keep the file size small in that case as Proboards charges for file storage.
Adam.

I half understood that, as I don't speak Spanish (please try to post in English, as that is the language of this forum - poor quality English is fine), but I wouldn't be able to help identify the Heliconius myself as I study Papilionidae and know relatively little about other butterflies.

Adam. I must say if you understood half that your Spanish is good. I only understood “Hola senior” but I translated it so basically Andres asking you Adam if he could email you photos and you would be so kind to post them as he cannot figure out how to do it. All the best Paul

Andres sent me the photos, and I tried to post them here. Now I know why Andres was unable to post them. When I tried, I got an error message stating the storage limit has been reached. When Clark posted the announcement on 16th January that he had sold Insectnet to Olivier he said that there may be problems posting photos during the transition period, see insectnet.proboards.com/thread/7431/insectnet-com-transfer-ownership : "After I post this last message as your Forum administrator I will initiate the process of transferring the Proboards ownership and administration of this Forum to Olivier. During this transition there may be a slight interruption of the file storage system which will affect the ability of Forum users to attach files to messages or expand existing attachment thumbnails. These abilities should be restored in a few days after the new admin takes over the fees associated with file storage. You can still 'embed' images in your posts if the image exists somewhere on the web." Hopefully this issue will have resolved itself soon. Andres said in his e-mail to me: "There are actually 3 copies that I have not been able to identify with precision and I have labeled them as "Hybrids" ... The strange thing is that the three copies (very different from each other) were obtained in the same date and place !!!!" The data is Rio Vermelho, SC, Brazil, and when pics can be posted again I will put them up here. If anyone wants to see them meanwhile I suggest you e-mail Andres directly. Adam.

I supose "SC" stands for santa catarina?

I supose "SC" stands for santa catarina? Yes it does, Rio Vermelho is a well known butterfly locality in Santa Catarina. Adam.

Hi dear friends, I have received several very interesting and illustrative answers. Finally I discovered that by an involuntary error the three Heliconiidae were "badly labeled" since their correct Data is "Obidos-Para-BRAZIL - October 1994". And they are HYBRID of Heliconius melpomene. Thank you very much anyway and to all the friends who have given me their help and knowledge. I regret only not being able to insert the photographs. Andrew

Don Andres,
Espero que ha encontrado las respuestas que deseaba encontrar. Yo no soy experto en Heliconidos, mas bien, me estoy acostumbrando en la fauna de mi area, que es la cuidad de Reno, Nevada y las Sierra Nevada de California.

Hello Mr. Joee30: Yes. I have been very satisfied since not only have I managed to identify them "correctly" but I have obtained specific literature that helps me in all my other identifications. Thank you so much everyone. Andres (www.mariposasdelmundo.com)
