When these little critters come out I know winter is gone and they are the beginning of my collecting season, therefore Orthosia will always be one of my favorites out there. This little guy just was found outside my garden and I guess he still is as I just took the pic of the living specimen. How about other places, you already encountered some Drabs and Quakers ? ( the German name still is the best, if I translate it it means kitty owlet, "Kätzcheneule" ) Orthosia cruda ( Denis&Schiffermüller, 1775):

I've collected these moths when there's snow on the ground in February at building lights in the US along with other genera. Jeff Prill

As soon as it stops raining I will put my trap out, I usually get a decent selection of these in the garden. Dave

Yes they are early flyers in any region they live in Jeff. You got a bunch of cool species over there in the US, I got some specimens myself from there that I think are Orthosia hibisci. Orthosia pulchella looks best but I haven't got any of these.
I hope weather will clear up soon for you Dave. I got Orthosia gothica too yesterday, I attached a pic ( which is not that good but anyway )
I usually trap in a birch forest at this time of the year, there I get - O. munda - O. cerasi - O. gothica - O. cruda - O. incerta - O. populeti
all at the same time, all at the same place...

Nice gothica, I would expect them to be on the wing here by now. Do you get the red 'gothicina' form there? Dave

I didn't know about that form but I found a pic now. No I haven't seen such form yet, but you must keep in mind that this season is only my 3rd year going after Orthosia so I probably haven't seen this rare form yet even when it exists here.
I kept the specimen pictured above, it had some nice yellow when looking at it, I hope it still keps those colors after drying.
