What an extensive list! Today I got one amatrix and one cara, starting to seem more normal.

Nice Rayrard. I found these two several years ago but I just wanted to make sure they are what I thought. My ID was C. vidua, do you agree? Actually, I have not seen another black-winged Catocala since! Indiana, Whitley County.

Yep......you are correct.......C. vidua. I caught my first vidua in years a couple of weeks ago.

Today I found this Catocala 60km west of Toronto, Ontario resting on the wall close to pepsi vendor machine, must to be lured by its light at night. I tried to identify this but I gave up and wish to leave it to the experts here.

Checked my traps this AM, and surprise, a fair number of rather fresh Catocala moths.
C. flebilis C. anguish C. robinsonii C. retecta C. dejecta C. serena (very worn female) C. maestosa C. insolabilis C. ulalume
There were several very worn C. ilia and a stunning female C.cerogama which I let fly.
I also had a stunning Plusinae moth: Eosophoropteryx thyatyroides. Now there is a tongue twister of a name. See if you can say that three times real fast.

I thought I had a C. marmorata at my sheet last night: It turned out to be C. maestosa, a new species for me just the same. Kind of a disappointment though. The forewings of the two species are very similar. That makes 18 species I have found in Whitley Co., IN

Yeh......I've had a few of those "maestosa moments" too. Good catch.....they are pretty nice to get. I've only seen one maestosa in the last several years here in IL. When I was last in MS, they were all over while I was tapping for atocala and carissima. Could have caught many more than eight maestosas, but I was focused/obsessed with the other two......if you know what I mean.

does anyone have a side by side of marmorata and maestosa? Are they really identical on the FW? It kind of reminds me of lacrymosa and palaeogama sharing FW pattern but having the different HWs
I has not been good collecting weather lately so no Catocala

Here you go. The FWs are similar, but are not identical. Both have that upper bar with some like markings....that's all.

thanks, they load right side up when clicked
seems like marmorata is a lot more mottled on the FW. Good to know.
