Has anyone reared Agapema homogena. Which host species will work. I will be looking for ova of this species for Spring/Summer 2016. If you know of a source let me know. Wayne

Wayne, I still have Agapema homogena cocoons for sale to US destinations. The larvae were reared on wax currant in Colorado. The following hosts are also indicated in various sources: Rhamnus californicus..... Rhamnus frangula Ribes alpinum Ribes cereum Salix exigua California coffee-berry Alder buckthorn Alpine currant Wax currant Sandbar willow Bill Oehlke Visit www.silkmoths.bizland.com/cocoons.htm for priocelist and ordering instructions. Of the items listed I only now have luna, polyphemus, promethea, io and homogena still available.

I tried to rear them this spring, but based on my research the pairing time is only about an hour and I never witnessed any pairings. This coming spring I'll try again and have Ribes alpinum planned as the diet. Wayne, perhaps you'll buy some pupae from Bill, but if I have extra ova in the spring I'll drop you a line. -- Eric

Will the wild currants here in Northern Indiana work for rearing these? Thanks, Tim

I just saw this post and have some additional information. I have reared a lot of homogena from AZ, all on Rhamnus californica (I think the name is correct), California coffeberry, which I have seen growing from AZ to Texas and north to Colorado at least. Give them an open, airy environment and fresh food and they do well. Only prob;ems I have had are with newly hatched larvae in too much humidity and with wild collected larvae that were parasitized (one really bad season).

How long do the eggs typically take to hatch?

I had some hatch out and caught some wild ones this summer, but never got any to mate. Sorry, no ova this year.

I have never bred Agapema but collected ova and newly hatched larvae in late July that I assume were laid in June (Santa Catalina Mountains, Arizona). I am not sure exactly when they fly as never tried to collect the adults, only larvae or cocoons. This is just based upon what I have read in the literature.
