I also recently purchased a Leptrap bait trap. Since July 3rd I have only had it up and operating for about 5 nights. The results have been pretty good. I have collected so far several Poylgonia comma, 2 Amphion floridensis, 3 Darapsa myron, 3 C. ilia, 1 C. micronympha, 1 C. coccinata (a new species for me), and 1 unidentified Catacola ( I will post the picture next week). I am in Southern Wisconsin. I am taking the trap and my light setup to northwestern Wisconsin this weekend. Do report back. Heading to Northeastern Wisconsin with my shiny new trap and MV setup in a week. Love to hear about your catch.

Did you get to keep any of them or is it off limits to collecting?

However, my trap didn't yield much. I got a nice Nymphalis vaualbum and the last night a Catocala unijuga. I think catocala season is just starting up north. I had much better luck with the lights. I collected several sphinx including Ceratomia undulosa, Sphinx poecila, Lapara bombycoides, Smerinthus jamaicensis, Paonias myops, and Pachysphinx modesta. I also collected a lot of smaller moths and several beetles. The prize of the weekend was a nice male Actias luna, which was a bit of a surprise to catch one this late in the season.

Like amatrix but I think it's early for those.

I guess I'm going to go out and beat the trees this weekend. Might even try sugaring too.

A late thank you to Jtaylor for the welcome.
First week of July started off rough with lots of rain and this caused both of the platforms to my leptraps baitraps to warp, one which split open on one side. Thankfully tape, glue and some bending fixed them. They've been working great since and i've added the following species this month:
C. neogama/subnata (2) C. lacrymosa (1) C. palaeogama (6) C. maestosa (2) C. amatrix (3) (2 selecta) C. nebulosa (1) C. piatrix (6+) C. muliercula (10+) C. serena (1) - 2nd maryland record i believe.
Lots more of ilia, ultronia & amica/lineella. Also have lost a couple, one which i believe was the annida form of palaeogama and a new species, C. cara. Both were lost when i tried removing them from the traps at night with a flashlight shining on them. Now i just wait until morning and haven't lost any since. I've caught all but one (piatrix to mv) by bait. That single piatrix is only the 2nd Underwing (also a piatrix) i've caught by light since i started mothing in August last year. Went tree tapping 4 times and didn't see a single moth, so i don't plan on doing that again. I've found that it's easy to catch them with a container while they're on baited trees. So i'm going to try doing that in a forest near my house this weekend. just not too fond of being in a pitch black area
Question to others who use traps with fruit/sugar. Do you catch many species of Long-horned Beetles? I get a lot of Spined Oak Borers but recently i caught a Stenelytrana emarginata and it got me interested in them.

When you go to empty out the trap the insects get stirred up a bit. I cut a cardboard circle about the diameter of the inside of the trap. I unzip the trap and drop it in before I start trying to remove specimens. This eliminates escape through the bottom when they go crazy. I call it the "bait blocker"

Caught six catocala in my traps this morning, i think one might be a new species but i'm not too worried about them right now because i think i caught my best moth so far. It's supposedly very rare in Maryland.

Congrats on getting a versicolor. Good moth indeed. Last night I got my first C. meskei from Illinois at my lights and also a form of D. rubricunda I've not yet captured. Also....welcome to Insectnet. Maybe we could do up a trade if you keep getting C. muliercula in large numbers. PM me if interested. Bill

Hi Bill. I actually haven't collected any moths yet. I'm new to this and still have a bit to learn. Also i lack most of the supplies for collecting and need to buy them. So right now i'm just capturing, photographing and releasing (miles away to avoid recapture).

Jonn,
I have caught lots of S. emarginata in sugar traps (just dark brown sugar mixed with water). I don't see them at all except when they come to the traps. Nice beetle.

While doing yard work I caught 6 catocala in my back yard just by looking for them on the trees. Couple got away and I managed to get the yard mowed too.

I tried your bait blocker and it prevents most from escaping, thanks. Just need to be faster at getting the zipper up and placing the thing in before they go crazy. Haven't caught any new underwings in the past few days but i did get another Hydrangea sphinx.
