I have a specimen of Cercyonis pegala alope collected in Geauga County, Ohio on 17 July 1889. It was given to me by some one at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to show me how a mounted specimen should look. There was no collectors name on the Label.
I still mount specimens the same way today.

This is the oldest specimen in my collection, caught by Clarence Buckley at Sarayacu, Ecuador in 1879: Adam. Were you with him? :-) My oldest is a South American nymphalid, forgot which species, 1908. One of my favorite "oldies" is a papilio machon from Hannover, Germany, 1935.

Luckily, I'm not quite old enough to have joined him on the expedition Clarence Buckley seems to have been a very interesting and not very well known zoological collector. He sent many butterfly specimens from South America to Hewitson, who described new species based on his collections. He also collected many other types of animals and sent them to the BMNH. I posted some information about him here: collector-secret.proboards.com/thread/497/old-butterflies-famous-collectors?page=3Adam.

I had quite a number of Sphingidae collected in the late 1800s, but the oldest specimen I possessed was a specimen of Sphecodina caudata collected in 1852, in if I remember correctly in Soo-Chow China. I had other sphingid specimens as well from that location and collected there around that same time period. I had many dozens of specimens from the late 1800s across Europe as well. This material is located among the (~ 50,000) or so world Sphingidae I personally donated or sold, and is presently located at the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, Florida Museum of Natural History, Gainesville Florida
I had the most interesting collected specimens from many of the wars collected during active war times by collectors assigned to remote world locations, e,g, south pacific islands, etc., but even more interesting were the Sphingidae specimens I had from the same exact African location during the past century or so, but with labels indicating they had been captured in (5) different countries named, at a particular time in past history.
