from eBay
a female of antimachus for sale. The seller has probably been abused by his African provider as the female presented is a probably male with forewings cut to make like a female (Central Africa is the world's best place for such bad behaviour).
I warned the seller to verify some details (to be sure 100 % sure) who is probably a victim of a scammer

Yes, the tips and front margin of the forewings look like they have cut short with scissors, a crude attempt to deceive. I have also seen ads where male P. antimachus have been photographed at an oblique angle to shorten the wings in the image and claim they are females.
Surely these scams would only fool the most ignorant collectors.

Johnny is right, the forewings have been cut short to resemble a female with shorter wings, also the abdomen is a give away if the claspers are present, personally it was the cut wings that I noticed first, it doesn't look natural no matter how close they have tried to resemble it to being natural.

On the eBay listing there is an underside photo of the 'female'. It does not have claspers, but they could well have been removed, the resolution of the photo is not high enough to see clearly. Of course it could also be a real female abdomen (removed from a battered specimen) glued onto a male.

A member of another forum pointed out there that the male and female of Papilio antimachus differ on the discal area of the forewing underside. The male has a row of large white spots running parallel to the forewing cell, whereas in the female they are orange.
The female pictured in Butterflies of the World part 42, The ABRI Collections I Papilionidae, also does not have white discal spots on the underside of the forewing, and the underside of the bilateral gynandromorph on the same plate differs similarly between the two sides.
Guess what ... the eBay "female" does have these discal white spots, therefore it MUST be a fake.

I just received the answer from the eBay seller, he verified his specimen. He was abused by his provider. He is not happy

It's the second times in some months that Papilio antimachus male is sold as a female on Ebay..... Yes, but this time the seller has done the right thing and withdrawn the item from auction. Adam.

Serious question: do crude fakes have any "novelty" value? I've heard of fake gynos being made with scissors and glue, etc.

Africaone- That's not that bad at all. I always wanted a Papilio rex, but they always seem somewhat pricey.
