I am planning to go to Panama this summer, and I am planning on collecting insects. Does anybody know permits needed to collect and/or bring them back. Any advice or help would be great!
-Alex

I'll check with a friend who goes on a regular basis and see how he gets his permit. I'll send you a pm once I get the info. John

Just go to Belize. I didn't need a permit to collect, even though one is required. A lot of the butterflies and moths are probably the same. As well as most of the beetles and other insects. I used Biologia-Centrali Americana on line to identify most of the insects that I collected, plus I had to cross-reference to make certain that the identifications were correct. I also searched the literature to find papers that I needed for most of the genera. I simply listed the insects by genera and family if Customs searched my luggage, but amazingly we went right through and nothing was contested. Jeff Prill

Collecting via permit is required. It can get complicated with the requirements. jshueys friend is a good resource and you may collect under his permit. I think Jeffrey at Mt Totumas has a beautiful place and allows collecting on his land.

Albert Thurman of Phoenix, AZ collects in Panama regularly with university permits. I'm not sure what the process is but it's 100% legit.
