Hi, We will be visiting Canada in July and I would like to know what the laws are with regard to collecting butterflies.
Any advice would be great.
Many thanks

The rules are similar to the states... stay out of Federal, Provincial, & most Regional (local)Parks, nature & Native (Indian) reserves. No problem collecting in Provincial forests that I am aware of... I collect almost exclusively in Prov. Forests & have run into Conservation Officers 3-4 times in the last nearly 40 yrs. I explained exactly what I was doing (they thought the net was for catching minnows for fishing...), they smiled in understanding & told me to watch out for the bears! Regarding bears... if you intend to collect in remote northern forests bears are a very real danger... I always carry bear spray & a big hunting knife on me, with an airhorn (canned air with a boat horn) on my trike/quad. Don't forget a good deet-based bug spray. Our Conservation officers here in Sask. (& most provinces) are more interested in illegal big game hunters/fishermen (poachers) than us "small game" hunters. Good luck collecting...

As a kid, I ran around with my net everywhere... federal parks, provincial parks... I'm not sure how I got away with it. Maybe because I was young, but then again I'd have expected my parents to get a talking too.

On numerous occasions I've seen kids running around parks with those little colourful kiddie b-fly nets their parents bought them in the souvenir shop, in the park! Most of them use the nets to catch minnows off the docks. If I suddenly whipped out my black, 18" net with my extendable 8 ft. handle, & started running around in camo, in the same situation... weeell... maybe not!... unless it was an absolute rarity or aberration which I would dutifully donate to the park (or at least a good photo/writeup about it)... Here in Canada we are blessed to have an abundance of millions of acres of gov't forests & they contain most of the same spp. found in most of the parks...

Hey. Decided to post here instead of creating a new thread.
I'm going to Vancouver in end of july this year and wondering if there is any particular places which are good for collecting butterflies. I'll also go to Whistler for some days, so any places around there is also good.
Thanks!

Just head out into the county side. Search for various habitats to maximize species count. Meadows, roadside, woodland borders, dirt logging roads etc.
