I wanna take a brake from work this year and spend more time collecting beetles in Asia, so I sent 3 months collecting in Cambodia, Yunnan China and Nepal. I've spent 4 weeks collecting in Cambodia and to my surprise I've found 4 Chalcosoma caucasus males, lots of females and larvae. If I didn't catch them myself I probably wouldn't believe it. I've found the beetles in Cambodia are a cross over between Java, South Thailand and South Vietnam, very interesting. Has anyone heard Chalcosoma caucasus from Cambodia or knows which ssp dose this Chalcosoma caucasus belongs to? Here's a photo of the 4 males.

I have no idea which family of butterfly dose this larva belongs to but it's from Cambodia? I never had any interests in butterfly but anyone might be able to tell me? I also had two butterflies came to my light sheet at night.

You certainly get around in the far East on collecting trips. Impressive specimens.

Has anyone heard Chalcosoma caucasus from Cambodia or knows which ssp dose this Chalcosoma caucasus belongs to? Chalcosoma caucasus has been known for a long time from Chantaburi, Thailand, near the Cambodian border. I remember finding it at Khao Soi Dao in the early 1980s. Some Sundaland species of butterflies (eg. Parantica aspasia) are also found in that area, when they are not known from other parts of Thailand except the peninsula. Some of these species reach Champasak in far southern Laos too. Adam.

Here's a photo from Cambodia I thought all you scaly collectors might enjoy. Surprisingly there are only 2 species in the photo, Graphium doson axion and Graphium sarpedon sarpedon, all males of course. Adam.

Thanks Adam I thought you might know. I love anything that's nasty looking, the nastier the better...... Thanks My no one beetle is Lucanidae but it's mainly an Asian family and that's why I love traveling and collecting in Asia. Plus I can't buy any sp from those areas and countries. That's why I'm doing this.

Actually thinking about it, I occasionally used to see these come to light here in Chiang Mai back in the days when I was helping the moth people from the NHM. They are the biggest wasps I have ever seen, quite frightening really when they are buzzing around you at a light. I guess this species has a much wider distribution than you thought. Adam.

I also had two butterflies came to my light sheet at night. What you found was probably a larva of Eterusia aedea (Zygaenidae) or something close. The plant looks like some kind of Melastomataceae. Melastoma candidum (Melastomataceae) is recorded as one of its food plants in Okinawa, Japan. Eterusia aedea larva www.flickr.com/photos/itchydogimages/7634400152/
