Is there anyone know something about the real identity of Luehdorfia choui? Is it a variation of Luehdorfia chinensis huashanensis or a hybrid between Luehdorfia chinensis and Luehdorfia longicaudata£¿ Thanks a lot~

Luehdorfia choui SHOU & YUAN, 2006 ist treated as synonym of L. chinensis huashanensis by Bollino & Racheli (Maurizio Bollino & Tommaso Racheli: Butterflies of the World, Supplement 20, Parnassiinae (partim), Parnassiini (partim), Luehdorfiini, Zerynthiini, 30-VIII-2012, Goecke & Evers (publishers), Keltern, Germany).

By the way,do you know the treatment of Luehdorfia chinensis shoui ,which was described together with choui? Is it also the synonym of L.c.huashanensis?

Bollino & Racheli treats shoui also as a synonym of huashanensis "or it could be a natural hybrid between huashanensis and longicaudata" (Opus cit., p. 27)

Mr.hewi I'm sorry to disturb you for the third time ,but do you know the treatment of Luehdorfia taibai wangi Zhao,1997? Is it the synonym of the nominate subspecies of L.longicaudata? And have anyone recorded L.longicaudata from Sichuan Prov.? Thanks~

Luehdorfia taibai wangi Zhao,1997 is treated as a valid subspecies of Luehdorfia longicaudata Lee, 1982, with Type Locality 'Mt. Daba, Sichuan' [Chongqing, China] with the following provision: "Due to lack of material we provisionally retain the validity of Zhao’s subspecies although it is not unlikely that it is a synonym."
The distribution of ssp. wangi is given as 'China: Chongqing (Daba Shan), Western Hubei', and ssp. longicaudata as: 'China. Shaanxi (Taipaishan, Qingling Mts)'.
Daba Shan is a range of mountains on the border of N Sichuan, S Shaanxi, N Chongqing and NW Hubei, but generally more precise data is not available for specimens, so I cannot confirm if L. longicaudata has been collected within the boundary of modern Sichuan (Chongqing used to be considered part of Sichuan).

Just a supplementary note: Adam's quotation is withdrawn from the paper of Bollino & Racheli too.

Manfred,
Indeed I quoted from Bollino & Racheli, since it seemed that the question was specifically referring to the treatment in that publication.

adam when do you think would be the best time to look for Luehdorfia in Daba Mountain?

It would depend on local conditions, but Luehdorfia can be found from mid to late March until May. I suspect that depends on both annual weather fluctuations and altitude of the habitat. Also I would think that perhaps populations in the south may emerge slightly earlier than those in the north. Sorry I cannot be more specific, as you no doubt know things vary considerably even in the same location. For example normally Graphium phidias in Lak Sao, E. Laos, emerges about 3rd week of February, but due to unusually cold weather in 2008 they emerged a whole month late.

I fell in love with this group ever since I got my first Luehdorfia japonica and puziloi from a trade with a Japanese collector a very long time. I need to try and trade again for these beauties.
