Since a lot of the people bidding are from this forum, I don't think it's a good idea to post links until the auction is over. I want one but now my chances are shot

lordpandarus < sorry my friend, I did not want to ruin your chances. I just wanted David to obtain the most for this rarity. I do think serious dealers should be well paid when they really bring to the market rarely offered lep.
If not, they will just keep on selling boring common stuff.

Since 2009, AFAIK only one on the regular market: the male I caught in Biak.
Outside the classic open market, there have been - a pair last year on Japanese auctions, - the pair you bought last year in a British insectfair.
So I have no idea of the real figure for the last 10 years but the answer must be : very very few...

The ones I saw on Bidders sold for cheap.
Personally I think it's about a 40$ butterfly relative to other rare specie we don't see often for sale. There's other "rare" species in the PNG area that we almost never see but always sell for about that price (30-40$) when a few specimens show up. Like Doleschallia dascylus and dascon with blue spots. It's probably because there's no established hunters on Biak or we'd see it for sale in websites like Ken Thorne
In old catalogues and lists C.imperatrix used to be about 20$. I saw it advertised a few times when I first checked out the Internet (but sold out)
The 100$ price range is more for those rare Cethosias we see in New Britain and New Ireland

Lord P < have you been to Biak ? Have you discuss with local hunters ? Have you discuss with Detani who has thousands of Biak specimens for sale but no imperatrix.
I can guaranty you it is not a common lep.
About Cethosia obscura and so on, they are not so rare at all.

I was just speculating from experience of looking at price lists over the years. Your probably right, maybe this one is a special one.
But I also think these rare nymphalids that do not belong in a cult group (like Agrias, Anaea,Charaxes,Prepona) are a bit neglected by collectors and the price usually doesn't goes that high even if they are rare.
This would explain why Dunc bought them for cheap at an insect show where probably hundreds of people overlooked them up before him

I arrived at the fair an hour late too I thought they would have gone. The problem is most people at the fair would have no idea how special they are they would be too busy looking at all those shiny swallowtails and morphos.

Exactly. I can arrive 2 hours late at my Insect show and have no worries about the butterflies I want.
Some Kallima philarchus and Euthalia durga just sat there for the whole day one time. They were only 40$. Everyone rushes toward the Morpho,Papilio and Ornithoptera
If the Indowings auction had no set picture, most would not notice the C.imperatrix

I agree with you on this. Many collectors do not know well how rare some Nymphalidae and Pieridae are.
