That increases humidity while decreasing temperature, I wouldn't recommend anything that increases humidity for storage of insect collections.

The best way is A/C unit and dehumidifier ( good one ). The A/C may not be enough for smaller room as the room will get cold enough to turn off A/C and at the same time the humidity will rise back to the previous.

THE ZOO DIRECTURE ( IF STILL THERE) GOT THINGS DONE AND HAD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BRITISH MILITARY FOR HELP. tom Sharon Matola passed away last year - I am still pretty sad about that. Sharon was the lead organizer of the Doyle's Delight expeditions (http://biological-diversity.info/Doyles%20Delight%20Butterflies.htm). She was a huge supporter of the environment in Belize and a really nice human being. The zoo carries on without her, but it has been tough the last couple of years without her and with Covid related impacts to tourism. Hopefully that is turning back around now. The Brits have been gone a for at least a decade now - at least permanent base-wise. They still train in Belize every now and then. And yes - Sharon had a great relationship with the Brits. They flew us up to Doyle's Delight - no charge. They made a second trip up when we ran out of rum (Sharon and her friends liked to party)! And they provided lots of butchered meat scraps to the zoo to feed all the injured jaguars that Sharon rescued over the years. Even when the zoo was hitting on all cylinders, keeping the cats fed was a struggle. John

i'M SORRY ABOUT SHARON. SHE WAS THE HEART AND SOUL. sHE WENT THERE ON THE ADVISE OF CHUCK HETTLE A NAVY SCUBA VET AND MY DIVE INSTRUCTURE. THE STORY I HEARD WAS THAT SHE WAS WITH A MEXICAN CIRCUS WHEN THE BELIZE ZOO WAS STARTING. MET SOME PRETTY INTERESTING BRITS THRU SHARON. A BRIT FIGHTER PILOT WHO ALSO A BUTTERFLY COLLECTOR. SO BELIZE WAS RIGHT PLACE TO BE,
BACK TO ORIGINAL PROBLEM. WHAT ABOUT AN AMERICAN STYLE WALK IN REFRIGERATOR ( MORE FOR MOISTURE CONTROL ). THEY ARE SECTIONAL AND KEY LOCK, STYRAFOAM TYPE MATERIAL AS INSULATION. CAN BE BUILT TO ANY SIZE. JUST A THOUGHT.

When I was part of the state, the goal was to solve problems rather than make them worse. I moved on to Pinellas county animal services. Less power but more pay. When the county began replacing people who cared about animals with 'government employees' I knew my time was coming to an end there. Fortunately, for me, I began preparing and had a lawsuit ready when they let me go. Got almost 2 years pay. Now I get my partial pension and disability because I was ready. Now I get to explore, record and observe.
Belize is an oddity (seemingly) in Central America with freedoms but still has its governmental issues (as the locals explained it to me). Robin Greaves is pushing to keep protected lands protected and has gone to some crazy lengths. Tourism on the beach is their biggest income but what good will it be if the forest keeps being cut for cattle and the mud then goes down stream to choke the reefs? If they get it streamlined for paperwork in collecting then great but we are not a big enough lobby to affect this much.

With the new paved highway, it may be easier to get more equipment such as a better generator and more solar BUT the cost to buy and then get them there makes this a lower priority.

We used to stay at the zoo's facility as a family, and Sharon would always make sure our son, who was pretty young back then, received VIP treatment. We all loved it! John

Yes - the grid really does not exist in Belize. Local towns often rely on a big diesel generators. Places out in the bush either don't have power at all, or use solar with car batteries for storage. Or they have their own generator on site... Those that are on the grid are charged rates more than twice the cost for power in adjacent Guatemala or Mexico. Belize has some of the most expensive power in all of Central America. john

to wingedwishes : I THINK YOURE' CLOSE TO ME JUST NORTH OF TAMPA. WHY FLY AMERICAN AIRLINES; DOSEN'T COPA AIRLINES FLY DIRECT FROM TAMPA ? SAVE A DAY IN TRAVEL. OR DID YOU NEED TO GO THRU CUSTOMS IN MIAMI ?
CAN I ASSUME THAT NO ONE IN BELIZE QUESTIONED YOU ABOUT COLLECTING ? NO CHECKING OF COLLECTING PERMITS ? NO ISSUE WITH CUSTOMS LEAVING BELIZE ? COULD YOU HAVE JUST STAYED AT MIKES PLACE AND COLLECTED ?
I HAVEN'T BEEN IN A WHILE AND THOUGHT I MIGHT USE YOUR EXPERIENCES.
THANKS
TOM

I HAVEN'T BEEN IN A WHILE AND THOUGHT I MIGHT USE YOUR EXPERIENCES. THANKS TOM Hi Tom, I've been to Belize a few times over the years, collecting. If you are in National Parks or really any protected area, you can expect to be asked about a permit if someone sees you with a net. There are quite a few people involved in conservation, between the Forest Department and the NGO staff that manage many of the sites - and they all know about the need for permits. I've been in the middle of no-where in the Mountain Pine Ridge - and asked about my permit (by what I figure was the only other person within miles of me!). That said, if you are on private ground, no one will ask (as long as you have permission). Of course, just because no-one will ask about your permit on private land, doesn't mean the bugs are legal to import to the US. Technically, you still need a permit as well as written permission from the landowner in order to obtain an export permit from Belize. And without these - you are at potential risk as you re-enter the US. So - I've always jumped through the hoops, just to make sure my bugs and I make it through customs. John

I left Florida to come home to Kansas when the wife passed away in 2014. I go from Wichita to Houston and then Belize. Mike brings the butterflies into the country as he already supplies other live specimens to the butterfly houses. I collect on his property and Mikes. Big areas! Supposedly I can collect on a government preserve with permission as the person in charge is a personal friend of Robin and would collect with me but I’ve not really had a desire to do so as I stick where I have success. Robin even let me collect in his flight buildings as he had too much stock when the world was closed down and the butterfly houses were closed in the USA. Mike offered me a discount this year to stay as they were hurting but I did not want to take advantage of his pain as the prices were already good.
