Hey everyone, hope you're all well =) I'm new here and this is my first post. I'm here because I recently spent some time with friends in Val Aupa in the Italian Alps back in June. I took my new HD video camera (a Sony NX5) to shoot some time-lapses of the valley. Little did I realise that the area would be so teeming with wildlife! By far the most interesting footage I came back with was the shots of butterflies (and some bees and grasshoppers) that I managed to capture using the camera's high-speed 'smooth-slow-record' function. I'm sure that many people here would be interested to see the footage and I thought perhaps some of you could help me identify some of the different species I captured? I know very little about Lepidopterology! I love your video with the nice gentle music. The images you caught were stunning. I do have a guide to European butterflies so made an attempt to ID some of them. The all white one with the thin black veins was Aporia crataegi - Black Veined White. The checker board looking one was Melanargia sp. possibly M. g. galathea or M. r. japygia or M. larissa. There were some brown Satyridae - Erebia m. meolans and Maniola sp. Hopefully some native European can confirm my attempted IDs for you. The Black Veined White can not be confused with any other European butterfly.

Wow; Bluemoth - thank you so very much for helping to ID some of the specimens in my video. I really appreciate your efforts so much and will credit you when I collate all of the IDs and add them to the video next week =)
And thanks to you and Clark for your feedback and support, it's really great to know people are enjoying my video.

There are common European butterflies, so it's not a problem  I mark the starting time-indexes for each entry. 00:17 - Maniola jurtina, male ( Satyridae) on the flower of Knautia arvensis00:30 - Zygaena filipendulae, or Z. transalpina - not enough details is seen to ID for sure ( Zygaenidae) 00:33 - Aporia crataegi, female ( Pieridae) 00:55 - Melanargia galathea, male, ( Satyridae) on the flower of Centaurea sp. 01:11 - Aporia crataegi, female ( Pieridae) 01:22 - Melanargia galathea, male, ( Satyridae) 01:33 - M.galathea + Zygaena filipendulae (or Z.transalpina) 01:55 - Maniola jurtina, male 02:06 - A.crataegi, female 02:15 - Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae) on Salvia(?) sp. 02:48 - M.galathea, male 03:05 - Erebia ligea, male ( Satyridae) on the flower of Ranunculus sp. 03:17 - E.ligea, male on the flowers of Astrantia sp. 03:46 - M.galathea, male 03:51 - A male of Plebejus argus or Lycaeides idas ( Lycaenidae) - there is a complicated complex of species, hard to ID precisely w/o of the genitalia study.
